Cable Firms Warm to Outdoor Wi-Fi, WSJ

The Wall Street Journal "tested several New York-area Wi-Fi hot spots
operated by Time Warner Cable and Cablevision. Simple Google searches
took several minutes to load at both operators' hot spots, while
YouTube videos and live streams from the WatchESPN iPhone app failed
to load after more than 10 minutes of buffering at various Cablevision
outdoor Wi-Fi access points in Brooklyn."

I still have not tried to connect to one of the TWC WiFi hotspots in NYC, but this is a good feature offered to subscribers by cable companies and one I hope they expand.
