Time Warner Cable raised the cable modem lease fee to $6 per month. This is $2 higher than what it was, and this fee was only just implemented earlier in 2013. Such a nuisance charge; another nickel-and-dime thing that makes people despise their cable providers. It's good for TWC stock holders as more revenue for them I guess, but not good for us customers.
It's now even more worthwhile to buy your own modem. I bought the Motorola Surfboard SB6141 on Amazon for $80. It will pay for itself after the 13th month. So far so good and I can recommend the Motorola SB6141. I had to call TWC and give them the modem MAC address for them to activate it. Fairly painless but a minor hassle. TWC should have a web page where you can activate your modem automatically, would have saved me a half hour on hold and dealing with their support people.
My monthly bill for just internet service (the 'Standard' package) should be about $52/month.
